Plitvička Jezera National Park is a destination that words cannot fully capture. Nestled in the heart of Croatia, this national park boasts some of the most magnificent landscapes and picturesque waterfalls you'll ever encounter. If you're planning a trip to Croatia, Plitvička Jezera National Park should be at the top of your must-visit list. This internationally acclaimed park spans over 300 square kilometers and offers an unforgettable experience for nature enthusiasts.

Situated in the eastern part of the Lika region, between the Mala Kapela and Licka Pljesivica mountains, Plitvička Jezera seamlessly blends into its surrounding natural environment. The park is much more than just its famous lakes, although they are undeniably its main attraction. As the oldest national park in Croatia and a UNESCO World Heritage site, Plitvička Jezera has captivated tourists and locals alike with its unparalleled beauty.

The National Park: A Symphony of Sixteen Lakes

Plitvička Jezera National Park is home to sixteen stunning lakes, each with its own unique charm. These lakes, along with interconnected smaller lakes, cascading waterfalls, and captivating landscapes, form a natural masterpiece. The lakes are divided into the Upper Lakes (12 lakes) and the Lower Lakes (4 lakes). The Upper Lakes are perched on dolomite bedrock, while the Lower Lakes have carved their way through a limestone canyon. These lakes have been named by locals based on their locations, and these names have become part of the park's rich folklore.

Plitvička Jezera National Park is a testament to the remarkable power of nature. Its unique landscapes, favorable climate, and water rich in dissolved calcium carbonate have sculpted breathtaking travertine formations, making it unlike any other nature park. The lakes and cascades in Plitvička Jezera are in a constant state of evolution, with travertine growing at a rate of up to three centimeters per year. While the lakes themselves are estimated to be around fifteen thousand years old, travertine deposition has occurred in the area for hundreds of thousands of years. Every spring, the lakes undergo a transformation as a result of the sedimentation process, further adding to the park's enchantment.

The Upper Lakes consist of twelve lakes separated by travertine barriers. These include Prošćansko jezero, Veliko jezero, Čiginovac, Okrugljak, and Batinovac, among others. There are also smaller lakes such as Malo jezero, Vir, Galovac, Milino jezero, Gradinsko jezero, Veliki Burget, and Kozjak. Kozjak and Prošćansko jezero are the largest lakes in the Upper Lakes series. Kozjak, situated at an altitude of over 500 meters, reaches depths of up to 40 meters. Prošćansko jezero, at an elevation of 636 meters, reaches depths of up to 38 meters. These awe-inspiring lakes offer a visual feast for visitors.

The Highlight: Majestic Waterfalls

The waterfalls in Plitvička Jezera National Park are the true gems of the park, with the iconic Veliki Slap (Great Waterfall) stealing the show. Standing tall at 78 meters, Veliki Slap is Croatia's tallest waterfall. Visitors often find themselves captivated by its majestic beauty and can't resist capturing memorable moments beneath its cascades. Located near Plitvička Selo, at the end of the Lower Lakes, the Plitvica River plunges down, creating a thunderous sound that adds to the waterfall's grandeur. Unlike other waterfalls in the park that form due to travertine barriers, Veliki Slap is unique as it is formed solely by the waterfall effect itself. The sheer power and beauty of the waterfalls in Plitvička Jezera National Park leave visitors in awe.
